Turmeric from Sri Lanka is one of the most highly prized spices in the world, for its rarity and rich content of naturally occurring compound known as Curcumin. "Research suggests that curcumin can help in the management of oxidative and inflammatory conditions, metabolic syndrome, arthritis, anxiety, and hyperlipidemia. It may also help in the management of exercise-induced inflammation and muscle soreness, thus enhancing recovery and subsequent performance in active people."
Turmeric is a yellow spice native to Asia and is a member of the ginger family. It is celebrated for its vibrant yellow colour, often used for dying cloth and famously used in paste form in Hindu celebrations. Vibrancy and karma aside, Turmeric has a gingery-ness, woody, floral aroma with a bitter-sweet, astringent flavour that is unique and has become a staple for curries, cakes, soups in many parts of the world.
Ceylon Providore's Turmeric is sourced directly from the growers. It is a labour-intensive process often involving cleaning the roots, sorting the fingers, pressure cooking until perfectly aromatic, then slicing, dicing and naturally drying until the moisture content reduces to 5%. After that, it is ground to produce the deep yellow powder that is ready for consumption. Although growing Turmeric is cheap and straightforward, only two kilograms of raw rhizomes would yield roughly 150 to 200g of Turmeric powder, combined with the labour-intensive process of powder production, makes it an expensive spice.
