Sri Lanka is resourceful with exciting flora and fauna, making it well known for its spices and food with rich, complex flavours and aromas. There's no limit to what Ceylon Providore can provide for you from our paradise island, and we hope to grow and bring a variety of uniquely Sri Lankan products over time.

Our Values

Care for the people in the supply chain.

We intend to acquire the Fairtrade certification eventually. Why eventually, and not right now? There are two reasons that this is a challenge for us at the moment.

Firstly, we want to focus on understanding the people behind our products and addressing issues related to sustaining their livelihoods so that we can use our funds generated from sales toward the right initiatives.

Secondly, Flocert, the certifier of Fairtrade, does incredible work by ensuring that fair & ethical practices are followed throughout the supply chain. We believe in the fairtrade framework strongly. However, the cost of fairtrade certifications is close to a million Sri Lankan Rupees every year. Unfortunately, this cost is not sustainable for smallholders and smaller traders. We will constantly monitor our growth and initiate the certification process when it is financially viable.

We want to ensure you that we have already put in place guidelines to follow Fairtrade practices. Some of the guidelines we adhere follow the WFTO fairtrade principles shown in the image. For more information on fairtrade principles, visit the WFTO website by scanning the QR code.

Covid-19 Pandemic has tremendously burdened independent farmers and smallholders due to challenging macroeconomic factors unlike ever before, such as regional lockdowns, rising inflation, unpredictable climate crises and political unreliability. We want to tackle these problems by supporting the farmers with what they need the most. Through this platform, we provide the farmers with another avenue to reach the global marketplace. Furthermore, 10% of the profits are donated to projects supporting farming communities through our "Farmer's Collection" initiative. We will keep you informed via our social platforms on the projects that we undertake.

Our Values

Care for the consumer.

Consumers are the heart of Ceylon Providore, and we always care about bringing you the best whilst we listen to you and continue to make our products and services better over time. Keeping your health and well-being in mind, we consistently source the top quality grades for all our products.

Our products are sourced from smallholders and independent farmers around the island. We do not source any of our products from commercial agriculture organisations. The smallholders and independent farmers often grow their produce in their lands and follow traditional farming methods that avoid chemical fertilisers. Furthermore, Sri Lanka has restricted the imports of chemical fertilisers since 2021, making it nearly inaccessible to smallholders. This encourages the smallholders and farmers to identify new organic methods of cultivation. Scan the QR code for more information with regards to restriction of chemical fertilizers in Sri Lanka.

We intend to acquire the necessary organic certifications for different markets for all our products. However, various certifications add up to hundreds of thousands of rupees yearly, depending on the certificate. The costs of certification are quite expensive for smallholders and traders. Therefore, we will constantly monitor our growth and initiate the certification process when it is financially viable.

We want to ensure that, regardless of our organic certification status, you will always receive the best products that are natural and free of chemicals. Therefore, we are happy to explore any additional requirements you may have to validate the nature of our products before you commit to buying from us. We can also schedule a tour of the farms we source from virtually or in person so that you are confident that the products you buy from us are inherently natural, harvested sustainably from the wilderness and organic.

Our Values

Care for the environment.

Sri Lanka is well-known globally as a tropical paradise with incredible biodiversity and geography. At Ceylon Providore, we want to ensure that we never compromise when it comes to the environment. After all, the environment bears our products and gives us resources and pride as an island nation.

Therefore, we would always choose what is best to reduce environmental pollution and carbon footprint whilst encouraging sustainable forest practices among our farmer's community.

Care for the environment

Sustainable Forestry

We have put guidelines to ensure that the products we source are always sourced following sustainable forest practices.

We do not accept products that we cannot trace the origins. We need to ensure that trees and forests in protected areas and conservation remain unchanged to preserve the biodiversity in the area.

We work with local agriculture consultants to educate our farming community on sustainable harvesting practices.

Sustainable Packaging

At Ceylon Providore, 90% of our packaging are eco-friendly and made from sustainable materials. All of our kraft paper pouches will completely decompose in landfills within a 12-24 month period. Our packaging has two components, Paper and Compostable Plastic Lining within. The paper used for our packaging is FSC certified by our supplier; this ensures that paper comes from responsibly managed forests that provide environmental, social and economic benefits. The compostable, biodegradable film/lining in our packaging is tested and certified OK HOME compostable by TUV Rheinland.

Contrary to the norm of see-through plastic packaging that is popularly used, we chose home compostable packaging for our sustainability initiative due to the uncertain recycling infrastructure in Sri Lanka and many other developing countries. The most common recycling plastic companies in Sri Lanka only can recycle PET plastics bottles, cans, tubs and lids. The most commonly used Kraft paper stand up pouch packaging (often claimed to be eco-friendly) trending in food packaging in many developing countries are not truly environmentally friendly due to their polythene lining and the lack of recycling infrastructure in developing countries. The clear poly lining within the kraft paper stand-up pouch bags that keeps the product fresh is often plastic, commonly classified as "other-bisphenol or low-density polythene (Recyclable bin 4)". This poly lining is non-biodegradable and, in some cases, only recyclable in unique industrial recycling facilities. The paper sourced to manufacture these kraft paper bags are also cheaper due to unsustainable deforestation practices.

Home compostable plastics are more eco-friendlier since they decompose entirely over time in a home compost or landfill as they are made of PLA or cornstarch that gives them a milky white appearance. However, this lack of visual transparency is unfavoured by FMCG brands and is often ignored as packaging options.

Despite the lack of visual transparency in our packaging, we assure our customers that our products are of the highest quality and contributes towards making the right choice for a sustainable environment by design.
